The Indian reality: the family bed

Most Indian babies share the parents’ bed or room — and that’s okay. Instead of arguing against co-sleeping, let’s make it safer: a firm mattress, no heavy blankets near the baby, and a clear space on the open side of the bed.

    Keep the sleep surface clear

Pillows, soft toys and loose sheets are the main risks for babies under one. A clear, firm surface is the single most important sleep-safety rule, whether in a cot or the family bed.

    Watch the temperature

Indian summers plus a ceiling fan is usually fine; what to avoid is overdressing. A single light layer more than what you’re comfortable in is the reliable rule of thumb.

    When they start rolling

Rolling arrives around 4–6 months and changes everything overnight. Lower the mattress if you can, place a thick mat beside the bed, and never leave a rolling baby alone on a raised surface.
